As we wrap up another school year, I find myself reflecting on the many emotions that come with this time of transition.
Growing up, I remember watching my mom, a dedicated science teacher, as she wrapped up the end of each school year. I would see her sorting through papers, packing up her classroom, and thoughtfully reflecting on the impact she had on her students.
It was during these moments that I realized the profound influence she had on so many young lives. As a teacher myself, I thought about the kind of impact I wanted to have on my own students.
Teaching is a unique profession. We have a finite time to reach the children in our care, pouring our heart and science knowledge into them for a year.
Then, whether it was the best group we ever had or one of our most challenging years, we say goodbye and send a piece of ourselves with them. We are not in the business of keeping them; we are in the business of helping them grow and move forward.
Lately, we've been hearing a lot about teachers leaving the profession at an alarming rate. Burnout is real, and the demands on our plates are greater than ever. Whether this is your first year or your 35th, teaching in a post-COVID world has drastically changed our landscape.
I just want to say that I see you. Whether your year is still wrapping up or you have finished and are beginning your summer break, take a minute to reflect on the fact that the job you do matters. You are making a difference in the lives of the children you teach every single day.
Even though you may not always hear it from the students, your admin, or parents (though hopefully you do), I want to say THANK YOU!
Thank you for showing up, even on days you are struggling. Thank you for giving all you have to give every year. And thank you for choosing to be teachers! You are all amazing!
This summer, I hope you can take time to relax, unwind, and know that what you do matters. Your dedication and passion are shaping the future, one student at a time.
